What does it mean that the Spirit of God broods over us?
Just as a hen broods over her nest to bring forth life, the Spirit of God hovers over the chaotic or broken areas of our lives to bring forth God’s promises and new life. He is entirely unafraid of the mess and works to hatch the plans the Father has for you.
Is the Holy Spirit easily offended by our mistakes?
No, the Spirit of God is not offended by your weakness or mistakes. He is the helper who comes specifically to break the curse and assist you in the messy areas of life rather than abandoning you when you fail.
What is the difference between a visitation and a habitation mindset?

Brooding Over the Chaos
When we open the pages of Genesis, we are immediately introduced to the Spirit of God. The earth is formless, entirely void, and wrapped in chaos. There are only dark and turbulent waters stretching out endlessly. Right there, in the middle of that vast emptiness, He is hovering. He broods over the chaos.
Think about why a hen broods over her nest. She does it to generate warmth and hatch what is waiting inside. The Spirit of God does the exact same thing over the waters of creation, and He does the exact same thing in our lives. You might look at certain areas of your life right now and see storms, disorder, or unfulfilled promises. We look at the chaos and assume God is far away.
He is actually incredibly close. He is hovering right over those exact spaces of confusion. He broods over your chaos to bring forth the life and the promises the Father has spoken over you. He is a friendly, powerful presence, entirely unafraid of the mess. He was there at the very beginning of creation, and He is present in the middle of your current circumstances.
Looking for a Place to Rest
Generations later, the earth was once again covered in chaotic waters during Noah’s days. As the rain finally stopped, Noah needed to know if there was any dry land left. He reached out and sent a dove over the vast expanse of water.
The dove, a picture of the Spirit of God, flew over the deep searching for a landing. Finding absolutely no resting place, the bird had to return to Noah in the ark. This historical moment carries a profound, overarching truth for humanity. Ever since the fall in the garden of Eden, the Spirit of God has been continually looking for a resting place.
Throughout the Old Testament, we see Him coming and landing on specific people for specific reasons. He would rest on Samson to give him immense strength. He would clothe Gideon like a jacket to win a battle. He anointed Bezalel with extraordinary skill to build the tabernacle. He would accomplish a specific task, bring a moment of victory, and then lift again. He hovered over the sea of humanity, offering moments of immense power while still seeking a permanent home.
The Trap of a Visitation Mindset
Because of these historical accounts, we easily adopt a visitation mindset. We pray and ask the Spirit of God to come down and change the atmosphere of our homes, heal our bodies, or fix our relationships. We plead for Him to visit us.
Our prayers reveal our deepest assumptions. We say, “Please come,” which implies we believe the Spirit of God is absent. A quiet fear follows His perceived arrival. We wonder how long He will stay this time. We fear that the moment we lose our temper, make a mistake, or fail in some way, He will pack up and leave.
We act as though we must completely clean our spiritual house before we can ask Him to enter. We assume He is skittish, easily offended by our weakness, and repelled by our failures. This mindset leaves us exhausted. We try to manufacture an environment perfect enough to sustain His presence. The prophet Isaiah felt this exact tension, crying out for the heavens to tear open so that God would come down and stay. We deeply desire for Him to remain constantly, while we feel unqualified to host Him permanently.
Heaven Torn Open
Isaiah’s desperate prayer was answered completely in the person of Jesus Christ. As Jesus stood in the Jordan River to be baptized by John, the heavens were literally torn open. John testified that he saw the Spirit of God descend like a dove out of heaven.
This moment fundamentally shifted human history. The dove landed on Jesus and remained on Him. The text makes a stunning declaration of absolute permanence. After thousands of years of hovering over humanity, searching for a dry place in a flooded world, the Spirit of God finally found His resting place in Jesus.
Jesus is the exact prototype of what we are designed to be. If He found a resting place on Jesus, He created you to be a resting place for Him as well. When you surrender to Christ and are born from above, a supernatural miracle happens. Your heart of stone, which was entirely incapable of connecting with heaven, is removed. You are given a new heart of flesh, and you become one spirit with Him.
The Breaker of the Curse
As a new creation, you live in a habitation reality. He makes His home in you, promising in Hebrews 13 that He will never desert you. He will not relax His hold on you, even when your house is messy.
The Spirit of God is not offended by your weakness. In fact, that is exactly why He came. The ancient word used for Him, Parakletos, translates to the breaker of the curse. He is the helper who steps right into your dirty rooms, your broken relationships, and your unresolved addictions to help you clean them out.
