Grow in Grace by Beholding the Glory of Jesus

How Believers Grow in Grace by Leaving Self-Effort and Living Through Christ

Many believers live with quiet exhaustion, wondering if they are doing enough for God. This heavy burden often comes from a misunderstanding of our spiritual reality.

The gospel reveals something far better.

Believers are invited to grow in grace, stepping out of weariness and into the life of Christ working within them.

Ephesians 2 reminds us that God made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. The Christian life does not begin with human effort. It begins with the grace of God, and it continues in that same grace every day.

In our previous article, Confronting the Hidden Prodigal Within and Rediscovering Trusting and Belonging, we explored how many believers drift into subtle independence rather than trusting God fully.

In our next article, Living Out the Freedom and Transformation Found in Romans 12, we explore how this inner transformation begins to shape everyday life.

Today, we will look at how to rest in your secure identity in Christ, what true divine enablement means, and how beholding Jesus leads to real transformation.

Grow in Grace by Beholding the Glory of Jesus

Embracing Our Heavenly Position

God moved with intense love to secure your salvation.

Before Christ, humanity was spiritually dead and separated from God. Yet Scripture tells us that God intervened and changed everything.

โ€œBut God, being rich in mercyโ€ฆ made us alive together with Christ.โ€
โ€” Ephesians 2:4โ€“5

Through Christ, believers are completely recreated.

You are not a repaired version of your old self. You are a new creation in Christ Jesus.

This is the beginning of what it means to grow in grace.

Paul goes even further in Ephesians.

โ€œHe raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.โ€
โ€” Ephesians 2:6

Right now, spiritually speaking, believers share a position with Christ.

You do not earn this position through effort or discipline. The Father gave it freely through the finished work of Jesus.

Living from this heavenly position changes everything.

You are no longer defined by your past failures or human limitations. Scripture calls you Godโ€™s handiwork, created in Christ for His purposes.

Understanding this truth builds the foundation for real spiritual transformation.

The Power of Divine Enablement

Salvation is a magnificent beginning, but Godโ€™s work does not stop there.

The Holy Spirit continues transforming believers into the likeness of Jesus.

Paul explains this process clearly:

โ€œWe all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image.โ€
โ€” 2 Corinthians 3:18

This transformation happens as we behold Christ.

Grace is not merely forgiveness. Grace is Godโ€™s ability working in and through us.

Hebrews describes grace as the help that arrives exactly when we need it.

โ€œLet us then with confidence draw near to the throne of graceโ€ฆ that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.โ€
โ€” Hebrews 4:16

Grace empowers the Christian life.

It is the life flowing from the vine into the branch.

Jesus said:

โ€œI am the vine; you are the branches.โ€
โ€” John 15:5

A branch cannot produce fruit through effort alone. Fruit appears because life flows from the vine.

In the same way, believers grow in grace when they remain connected to Christ.

Trusting Christ Instead of Striving

Many believers unintentionally approach the Christian life through striving.

They try harder to be patient.
They try harder to love people.
They try harder to live with peace and joy.

Yet striving always leads to frustration.

Paul asked the Galatians a powerful question:

โ€œHaving begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?โ€
โ€” Galatians 3:3

The Christian life begins in the Spirit and continues in the Spirit.

Believers grow in grace when they trust Christ instead of relying on their own strength.

When a branch lies disconnected from the vine, no amount of effort will produce fruit. But when the branch remains connected, fruit appears naturally.

The same is true spiritually.

Christ desires to live His life through His people.

Beholding Jesus and Discovering Your True Nature

Transformation begins with what we behold.

Scripture describes the Word of God as a mirror revealing spiritual reality.

When believers look into the gospel, they see the glory of Christ and discover their identity in Him.

The old self, with its failures and shortcomings, was crucified with Christ.

โ€œTherefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.โ€
โ€” 2 Corinthians 5:17

The believerโ€™s true identity is now found in Jesus.

The gospel does not simply tell us what we must become. It reveals who we already are in Christ.

As believers fix their gaze on Jesus, grace begins to transform their lives.

Remembering Who You Truly Are

Many believers live like an eagle raised among chickens.

Imagine an eagle egg placed in a chicken coop. The young eagle grows up believing it is just another chicken. It scratches in the dirt and struggles to live like the others.

Then one day it looks up and sees an eagle soaring high above.

Something awakens.

It begins to realize its true nature.

Similarly, many believers forget who they are in Christ.

The gospel reminds us that we were born from above and given a new nature. We were recreated in the image of God through Jesus.

As believers continue to behold Christ, they begin to believe what God says about them.

And as faith grows, grace begins to transform their lives.

The Secret of a Focused Heart

David understood this principle long before the New Testament.

In Psalm 27, he revealed the secret of his confidence during dangerous times.

โ€œOne thing have I asked of the Lordโ€ฆ that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord.โ€
โ€” Psalm 27:4

David knew that transformation begins with focus.

When our attention remains fixed on our failures, discouragement grows.

When our attention turns toward Jesus, faith and peace begin to grow.

Believers grow in grace as they continually behold the beauty of the Lord.

Revealing the Life of Christ

Godโ€™s purpose is not simply to save people from sin. He desires to reveal the life of Christ through His people.

Jesus said:

โ€œWhoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit.โ€
โ€” John 15:5

As grace continues its work, the character of Christ becomes visible.

Love grows stronger.
Peace becomes deeper.
Joy becomes steadier.

The fruit of the Spirit appears naturally as believers remain connected to Jesus.

This is what it means to live the Christ life.

Paul described it clearly:

โ€œIt is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.โ€
โ€” Galatians 2:20

Conclusion: Living the Christ Life

The Christian life begins with grace, but it does not end there.

Believers continue to grow in grace as they learn to trust Christ, behold His beauty, and discover their true identity in Him.

Transformation is not produced through human effort.

It flows from the life of Jesus working within us.

As believers keep their eyes fixed on Christ, grace quietly reshapes their hearts and lives.

Over time, the life of Jesus becomes visible to the world.
